Ancient Epidaurus , Greece: The Archaeological site of ancient Epidaurus, Peloponnese

 

 

The main archaeological site at Epidaurus is its ancient theatre, one of the main Greek achievements in terms of ancient construction. Apart from the symmetry and perfect proportions of this Hellenistic structure, the theatre is unique because of its excellent state of conservation, which allows it to be still in working order. Another distinctive detail about this construction is the perfect acoustics.This feature guarantees the 14.000 spectators the theatre can hold to hear every single word from their seats with no need of using electrical amplification equipment.

However, apart from the use that is given to this theatre, it is also related to the ancient tradition of Epidaurus, especially in religious terms, as it was dedicated to Asklepios, the main god of this town.
The facade of the Asklepion belongs to the Doric style, while its inside part can be categorised within the Ionic and Corinthian styles. This construction was inducted to World Heritage in 1988.

Last but not least, the Archaelogical Museum of Epidaurus displays some interesting objects found in the mentioned healing centre, such as medical instruments, and also some reconstructed parts belonging to this and other structures, like the Tholos. Therefore, this visit may perfectly

Regarding the view, as the platia has been built taking advantage of the natural pendent of the slope it is placed in, so the scenery can be seen from any location, as well as the green surrounding outside the theatre.
Regarding the worshipping of this deity, there is another interesting building that follows this purpose in a more direct way: the healing centre, called the Asklepieion.

As Asklepios was the god of healing, the ill were taken to this centre with the hope of receiving an apparition of him revealing them the cure to their diseases.This healing centre also includes a sanctuary, and several temples and constructions dedicated to other deities as well, e.g. the goddess Artemis.
