Festivals in Greece are usually connected to religious events. During the name day of a saint, a celebration takes place.
At first, there is a Mass and then the participants concentrate in the square of the village, where folk music is played, traditional dishes are served and people dance till next morning.
In the case of Elafonissos, Agios Spyridon, the patron saint of the island, celebrates on December 12th. |

The festival of Panagia on August 15th is also very popular.

Have in mind that most of the permanent inhabitants on Elafonissos occupy with fishing and in fact they have the biggest fishing fleet in Greece.
Although Elafonissos is a small island that is not characterised by wild celebrations, it provides the chance to go to different festivals and get to know its culture better.
