Elafonisos was inhabited in the Neolithic period and has nurtured many ancient settlements.
On Pavlopetri islet, the submerged remains of an ancient prehistoric city can be clearly seen, particularly when the sea is calm.
The town planning reveals a high degree of differentiation and complexity. Among the ruins, nearly 5 roads, 15 buildings, 2 tombs and several graves have been discovered. |

As Elafonissos was uninhabited in the ancient and medieval centuries and was settled only in the middle of the 18th century by residents of Mani, Laconia, the modern architecture of the island is uniform.
The houses on Elafonissos have tiled sloping roofs, brightly-painted windows and wooden doors. Most of them also have a wooden balcony that overlooks alleyways or the quay with its unending rows of fishing boats. |

The older buildings are made of stone with arched doorways, balconies with wrought iron railings and stone steps which lead on to cobblestone streets.
