monument of art, with sacred
vessels, valuable wood-carved iconostases and magnificent
Byzantine icons.
The three-aisled basilica of Agia Paraskevi was built
in 1803 in the settlement of Perachora and is a real marvel.
The three-aisled basilica of Agia Kyriaki is dated from
1740 and has unique carved wooden gold plated iconostasis
of the 18th century.
The Holy Trinity basilica of Agios Georgios was founded
in 1765 by Kalinikos and is of a really exceptional architecture.
There is also a really interesting old church in the settlement
of Metamorphosis.
Zagora also has some really nice chapels such as the 17th
century chapel of Profitis Ilias in the settlement of
Perachora, and, in the settlement of Agora, the 17th chapel
of Agios Dimitrios and the 18th century chapel of Agios
Nikolaos which has some interesting murals and some very
valuable post-Byzantine icons. |

Germans burned the entire village on
the 4th of April 1943.
This monastery was founded between 1204 and 1207 in Makrinitsa
by the despot of Magnesia Konstantinos Maliassinos.
The
settlement of Makrinitsa developed around the monastery.
It was built on the3 site of a three-aisled basilica of
Panagia which was standing in the centre of the cobbled
yard in 1767.
The monastery is surrounded by chapels such
as the two-storey chapels of Agioi Pantoi and Agios Nikolaos,
built in 1743 where a secret school was operating during
Ottoman domination.

This three-aisled basilica was built around 1809 and repaired
in 1965. This lovely stone church is located in the large
square of Makrinitsa, under the old plane trees, near
a magnificent carved fountain with crystal-clear water.

it is guarding the wonder-working icon and the skull of
Agios Gerassimos.
Down from the square is the single-aisled basilica of
Metamorphosis, work of the folk architect Dimos Zipaniotis.
Beyond this basilica is the church of Agia Triada which
contains hagiographs by the artist Pagonis, dating from
1836.
The three-aisled basilica of Agia Marina is a pure marvel.
It was built in 1745 in the lovely village of Kissos and
contains unique iconostasis of St. Marina and superb hagiographs
dating from 1802, made by Pagonis.
The church has a museum in which are exposed some beautiful
Byzantine icons of great religious and historical value.
The Byzantine monastery called ‘Agios Lavrentios’ was built in 1378 and every year on the 15th and 16th of August there is a large celebration to the memory of the monk, attended by people from all Greece.
