How many English words are Greek? The Australian newspaper “The Courier Mail” counted 11,555 English words with a Greek origin and the same does the Oxford Dictionary of English Language. “Many of those words are no longer in use, taking into account that the dictionary reports all the English words in the history of the language. However, a very important amount of modern English words still remains, deriving from Ancient Greek through Latin or French”.
