“I have a dream…”
I always liked to travel and see new places, but until 1989 we were confined to our borders. With great difficulties, Russia was accessible. We were there till the far east of Siberia, Central Asia…etc.
Then came December ’89. Borders blow-up ! Passport hysteria ! Each one, another course.
From Lisbon to Beijing we saw a few places.
But in our dreams Greece is totally apart. “In Greece the miracle is the daily flower of necessity “ (Nikos Kazantzakis). And Greece made us come back… And come again... And again… And once more… 12 times in 18 years. When I leave Greece my soul remains there. Sometimes I feel that if I don’t go to Greece, I will louse it.
The Greek mainland is great and beautiful. The shores and islands are pure paradise. Each island is unique. You can see hundreds and you are never bored. Sun, stones, vegetation, blue waters and the livegiving wind, how can you ask for more?
And the people: warm and welcoming; helpful and careful; protecting and yet reserved; logic as a guiding law; open-minded and with a great deal of common sense.
This wonderful people gave us Apollo, Athena, Prometheus, Platoon, Archimedes, Sophocles, Alexander the Great, El Greco, Nikos Kazantzakis, Vangelis Papandreou, and the list never ends.
Only one barrier: the language. What a pity! We could have learned so many things. If I want a miracle, that would be to make me speek greek overnight! How wonderful it would be to understand the "Odes" of Vangelis and Irene Papas, how wonderful to say in Greek : "I hope for nothing. I fear nothing. I am free." (Kazantsakis)
And another important thing. We never felt more safe than in Greece. No cheat, no thief, no beggar. How do they manage in this dangerous Europe ? A real pleasure and relaxation!
I do not dream to have a house in Greece and live there. I dream to rent each month another house in another island. Many months in every year.
I pray my dream come true.
I am in love with Greece.
