Ismini, that is a magic place, Agia triada plateia. I've been there and I was fascinated by it: the church is superb, I could not see it inside, though, it was closed. Is there a story about the plateia? And about the sculpture in the wall, is that the head of Dionysus, the old Greek God? It is a superb sculpture, I wonder who carved it there and why... And the fountain. Is there a legend about it, a story about the plateia?
Hi Lauramou!!! The AgiaTriada place is a really old place, and it goes back to the time when Purgos was the capital of the island. Italians, the previous owners of Tinos, have chosen Purgos as the most strategic place in the island, which allowed for controlling the Aegean sea, trading and being protected the same time from pirates. Purgos means Tower, and stands for an old tower built close to the old cemetary place, meant to survey the sea around Tinos.
The house having the Dionysos statue is a very old one and belongs to my family. We have recently renovated it and preserved the marble pieces in it - the lions standing on the door are of Italian - french origin, characteristic of the Ursuline knigt-age and specialists have estimated their age approx. since 1680. The house belonged to the Italian governor, who brought those lions from a castle in North Italy - France.
Agia Triada = Holy Trinity is a church which used to be catholic in italian times , but with time it became orthodox. Anyhiw, u have mentioned that in Tinos orthodox and catholic beliefs are a bit mixed-up ... AgiaTriada, as many churches in Tinos, is a private church, it belong to my uncle who has the house right above the Dionysos-house. If you visit Tinos again in the summer and U really want to visit the church, just let me know and i can arrange it for you!!!
I love my place so much and, altough i live and work abroad, my heart still beats for Tinos.
