Macedonia museums

Information about the Museums in Macedonia, in Greece but also information about museums in many locations of the region: The history of Macedonia has been extremely preserved in its museums which adorn the town of Thessaloniki and Halkidiki. The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki takes you on a long journey through the ages with an interesting art collection from the Archaic and Classical period as well as several discoveries from the tombs of the Macedonian kings, precious relics and treasures of Vergina.

The Byzantine Museum of Thessaloniki brings visitors in front of the life and culture of the Byzantine Empire with much insight into the architecture and decoration of the Christian churches. Its permanent exhibition focuses on the paintings, Byzantine items and icons. Thessaloniki is also home to a nice museum related to the Balkan Wars and the Museum of Contemporary Art housed in a modern building.

Equally interesting is the Cinema Museum which displays means from the private collection of Nikos Bililis, a famous cinematographer from Thessaloniki. One of the few museums that exist in Greece is the Anthropological Museum of Halkidiki, perched on the hill of Petralona. This place displays a rare exhibition of primitive tools made of stones and bones, from the prehistoric period.

Findings from the ancient cave of Petralona as well as artefacts are also displayed there. The recorded history of Halkidiki stretches back many centuries back and can still be traced in the town of Polygiros, Olynthos and Afytos.
