Halkidiki Architecture

The popular architecture of Halkidiki includes a variety of styles that very much resemble the local Macedonian architecture. From simple houses to more complex buildings, a typical feature that is often seen in Halkidiki is the enclosed balcony (called Hayati) in the south side of the floor while the doors and windows are also of great interest. Locals used clay, stone, oak, and wood to build the houses and the walls are painted in grey, blue, white and ochre. The fireplace characterizes the interior of the houses as a work of art with diverse and chimneys that are very impressive.

Strolling through the cobblestone streets and alleys which are lined by the beautiful Macedonian houses and buildings is enough to experience the historical past of Halkidiki. Halkidiki architecture is characterized by four-pitched roofs, architectural projections, roofed balconies and stonework from the local craftsmen. In Sithonia, you will see the splendid architecture that includes many monuments and traditional houses. The squares, the narrow streets, and the buildings keep alive the local color of Halkidiki Greece.

In the heart of Halkidiki is the historical village of Arnea that will give you a taste of its rich past and Macedonian culture. Today, the main resorts of Halkidiki provide luxurious conveniences with huge building complexes and other facilities that attract many visitors every summer. Despite the plethora of picturesque villages, the best sightseeing is a trip to the monastic community of Mount Athos, the jewel of Macedonia. One is left speechless by the unique natural phenomenon of the huge stone pillars on top of which stand the Byzantine monasteries.

Visitors can enjoy their stay in many of the traditional hotels that have respected the traditional architecture.
