Zakynthos Volimes Village

Volimes Zakynthos: The village of Volimes is located 33 km north west of Zakynthos Town. It consists of two villages: Ano (Up) Volimes and Kato (Down) Volimes both found round an agricultural area. Volimes is a large scenic mountainous village which still retains its traditional character and layout. It is still a very rural area and much of the village has been untouched by tourism. To the east side you will find quite a few cafes.

The village displays numerous stone built houses and old churches that have survived the earthquake of 1953. The most important is the church of Agia Paraskevi, that houses fine icons and frescoes. The old windmills that stand on the hill are also a sign from the past. You can also see the 16th century monastery of Agios Georgios. In close distance is the famous Shipwreck, an impressive cove with crystalline waters and soft sand. The Shipwreck Bay can be reached only by boat but there is a spot above Volimes where you can look down at the beach.

Volimes is a scenic mountainous village which still retains most of its traditional character. Much of the village has been untouched by tourism and therefor it is a perfect starting point for some walks to for example Diapori bay.

Volimes is located in the north-western mountainous part of the island. The village extends from the top of mountain Vrachionas (Apo Volimes) and ends at the north-eastern coastline (Kato Volimes). The beaches of Xigia, Makrys Gialos and Agios Nikolaos are worthwhile to visit when you are in the neighbourhood. The landscape in this region basically consists of pine forests, olive groves, and some vineyards. Please note that once every so many years, local wildfires can destroy part of the landscape ... at least for a while, as it takes a year or two before the landscape starts turning green and colourfull again. The waters in this region are crystal clear, perfect for swimming and snorkling. Volimes is a good base for visiting Navagio bay - passing the Anafonitria monastery - and Diapori bay. Reaching for the top of Mount Vrachionas is a challenge but worthwhile as it offers you magnificent views from the top of the island and on Kefalonia island in the north. When there, put your own stone on top of the pile of stones and raise the highest point of the island with a few centimeters.
