The church is famous for housing the miraculous icon of Agia Mavra which is surrounded by various offerings among which is the valuable and beautiful jewel of Queen Olga.

Our Impressions:

Maherado is off the main tourist trail and still very traditional. There’s a long climb from the west to reach Kiliomeno village from the east.
At the centre of the village is the dominating sight of Agios Nikoloas Church. A huge belfry towers above the cafes here and its design is very impressive with its several levels leading up to a crown-like peak. On the other side of the road is the church itself which is equally distinctive.
The journey to Maherado from Kiliomeno is all down here and on the way you catch the sight of an enormous, modern looking, church which dominates the landscape. In the village of Maherado itself there is the much older Agia Marva. Inside you can admire the ceiling paintings and look out for the icon of Agia Marva herself which you will probably see people kissing. The church has a balcony and impressive gold iconostasis. The church is located next to the main square of the village which is a pleasant and quiet area.
The village is very traditional and well worth a visit if you have a few days to spend on the island and fancy some time away from the tourist activity of the east coast.
