Zakynthos Tourism

Zakynthos is one of the most popular destinations in Greece where thousands of tourists from different parts of the world spend their vacation. Similar to the other Ionian Islands, it boasts astonishing beauty, natural trails, forested mountains and endless beaches with clear blue waters. Tourism in Zakynthos is very popular among families with kids, couples and also young crowds looking for an active nightlife.

A feature of the island that has made it famous across the globe is its bewitching beaches. The most photographed is no other than the renowned Navagio Shipwreck Beach, having an old ship sitting on its shore and marvelous azure waters. The beach is secluded and only accessible via boat.
Other popular beaches include the well-organized Laganas, Tsilivi, Kalamaki and Banana, with several beach and watersports facilities across them. Guests who prefer pristine landscapes should consider visiting the enchanting Dafni and Porto Vromi beaches.

Regarding attractions, the island is home to numerous sights of historical and cultural interest as well as breathtaking marvels of mother nature. The top attractions of Zakynthos have to be the Blue Caves on the northernmost side of the island and Marathonisi Islet, a virgin piece of land across Laganas Bay surrounded by crystal-clear waters that the lovely endangered Caretta Caretta (loggerhead turtles) frequent in order to lay their eggs.
Plentiful religious buildings have been constructed throughout the island, allowing guests to admire their impressive architecture, frescoes and objects. Agios Dionyssios is the most majestic church; that comes as no surprise considering that he is the patron saint of Zakynthos. It faces the port and attracts thousands of pilgrims every year, as it hosts the relic of the Saint. Other beautiful churches are Agios Nikolaos Molos in Zakynthos Town, Agia Mavra in Maherado village, the Monastery of Skopiotissa in Argassi and the Monastery of Spiliotissa in Orthonies.
The island is not deprived of museums either. Three of the most visited museums on the island are the Solomos Museum and the Post Byzantine Art Museum in Zakynthos Town and the Helmis Museum of Natural History in Agia Marina.

The ferry and the plane are the two ways to reach Zakynthos.
The island has two ports; all passenger ferries head to the main port and depart from Kilini (western Peloponnese) throughout the year, while a seasonal ferry connects the port of Agios Nikolaos Volimon on the northern part of the island with Pessada in Kefalonia.
The airport of Zakynthos is an international airport, which means that it receives flights from foreign countries, too. Direct domestic flights only take off from the International Airport of Athens.
