Zakynthos tips, impressions

Zakynthos Impressions

General information about Zakynthos

No question that Zakynthos is divided in two parts: the eastern part is packed with busy resorts and crowded nightlife spots, while the central and western part is calm and traditional. The most popular places are Laganas, Tsilivi and Alykes, where beaches are busy in the day and at nights the young crowds go to the many bars and clubs along the waterfront.

Zakynthos Town is the main town and has nice Venetian style. The center of the island has many traditional villages and monasteries, while the western coast has small rocky coves. Do not miss a trip to Navagio Beach and the Blue Caves.

Our impressions

The packed tourist resorts of the eastern coast will not be to everyone's taste and indeed the rowdy nightlife here is mainly for the young. It is unfortunate that some of the excessive tourism actually deters from the fantastic beaches on the eastern coast. Neverthless some, such as Gerakas, have escaped the mass of hotels around their edges. If you are seeking some tranquility away from the holidaying hordes, then go west to the delightful little villages with marvelous views.

Practical advices and tips

Arriving at the port

The main port is located in Zakynthos Town and receives ferries from Killini (Peloponnese, mainland Greece). There is a port in Agios Nikolaos Shinari that serves local ferries with Pessada Kefalonia in summer.

Arriving at the airport

The airport is located 6 km from Zakynthos Town and receives domestic flights and charters. There is a taxi rank outside the airport gate.

Road network

The majority of the road network is asphalt but narrow (one line per direction). Be careful of the roads in the western side because they are more dangerous and also be careful of the motorbikes.
