Although it was mainly used for recreation, it is a smart house with neo-classical influences.
It is thought to be built in the early 19th century and despite the fact of keeping the typical aristocratic vibe of those times, one of the ideas that is being currently considered is to restore and embellish it, not only in order to keep the house itself, but also to promote Zakynthos culture and keep its traditional places alive. Once put into practice this project, Sarakina house will probably become a center of activities and events.
This project foresees the possibility to turn it into a library focusing on the Ionian civilization. The projection behind this idea is to create a cultural center promoting education by keeping together many of the currently available study materials, and encourage the development of conferences, meetings, and concerts, counting on the support of some important Greek museums and foundations, like the Sarakina Zakynthos Foundation, in charge of this outstanding project.
Another possible use for Sarakina house is related to the storing of the remaining historic Zakynthos archives. While most of them were lost during the earthquake, a few were saved and kept in private. So Sarakina house could be a proper venue to keep them, as well as for keeping the most representative art pieces of the Ionian Islands.
The idea of restoring and using the villa came from its owners, Maria and Nikos Lountzis. They turned to the Benaki Museum, which provided the services of Dimitris Arvanitakis to perform some studies and elaborate a proper project that will attract public as well as private entities in order to get the necessary funds to achieve the goal. Though the Fourth Community Support Framework is the entity to take care of the fundation of the upcomming project, the participation of other foundations will also be requested.
Whatever the use the entity in charge decides to give Sarakina house, it surely will aid in the defense of intellectual heritage which is, in general terms, mainly focused on the profits obtained by tourism, instead of promoting the value of Zakynthos culture. Therefore, a project able to motivate cultural relations between the different parts of Greek as well as its interaction with other related countries, like Italy will sure be well received. |
