Alykes Zakynthos: The area of Alykes Zante (or Alikes) is located 18 kilometres north-west of the capital of Zakynthos and took its name from the salt-pits (alykes in Greek) hidden behind the village of Alykes. Those salt-pits used to be the main source of income and wealth of the islanders. A beautiful sandy beach can be found in Alykes, attracting many visitors for its amazing sand and crystalline waters. The main road passing through the settlement is boarded by a lot of restaurants, bars and tourist shops.
 
Numerous accommodations are available in the area. The coastal settlement of Alykanas is to be found a couple of kilometres from Alykes and is less popular (and less crowded) than Alykes. It offers a beautiful sandy beach which is the continuation of Zante Alykes Beach and also has crystal-clear waters. The whole area has many archaeological sites of great importance and interest for one to visit.

Our Impressions

The villages of Alykes and Alykanas Zakynthos (or Alikes and Alikanas Zante) blend into each other and both are touristy resorts with the usual range of fast food joints and bars. The architecture here is pretty indifferent and the only thing of interest here are giant salt lakes behind the village. The beach itself is very long and in for the most part quite narrow. It is very developed with a mass of hotels behind it and sunloungers on the majority of it. In the middle you find a river running through the soft sand. Indeed the sand here is nice but there are some pebbles.
Impressions: This is a fun and lively beach with lots of water sports on offer. It is certainly the biggest beach in the area and not for those who seek tranquility.
