Four tremors hit Zakynthos 2006-04-12 12:01:50 GMT

The Ionian island of Zakynthos shook yesterday, as four earthquakes, measuring up to 5.9 on the Richter scale hit the area. Though some damage to property has been reported, no incidents of injury have been reported so far. The tremors from the earthquakes were felt as far as Kalamata in the Peloponnese and even Athens.

The largest of the earthquakes, which measured 5.9 on the Richter, hit the island at around 8:30 p.m. and its epicenter is believed to be somewhere under the sea to the south of Zakynthos. The previous three tremors were felt between the time period of 12:10 a.m. to around 3:02 a.m. They ranged from 4.4 to 5.7 on the Richter scale.

Around 9 homes suffered damages with one of them being severely damaged, and the port also sustained damages, though not irreparably. After the tremors, schools remained closed yesterday as authorities conducted safety checks on the buildings to avoid further accidents.

Only as recently as last week, Zakynthos was hit by two tremors measuring to 5.7 and 4.8 respectively. Zakynthos is located in one of the most earthquake prone areas in the country.
