The Islet of Agios Nikolaos (or Ai-Nikolas) in Paxi Greece: As you approach at the port of Gaios, you will see a small, green island covering almost the entire entrance. This is the islet of Agios Nikolaos, named after a small chapel that has been built there. Once, this islet was used for the protection of Paxi against enemies and pirates, as a Venetian fortress can be seen on top of it.
This fortress was built in 1423 and although it is in ruins today, it is still worth to visit for its great view of the island. On this islet, you will also see another small chapel dedicated to Saint John and an old windmill. Small boats from the port of Gaios get visitors there. |
