Agios Nikolaos Beach Paxi: The tiny islet of Agios Nikolaos sits just opposite the bay of Gaios, the capital of Paxi, covering this large cove from wind and sea.
The boats and water taxis at the Gaios can be rented for a ride to the Agios Nikolaos islet which is covered with thick dense forests and is an ideal place to stroll. On the islet you will find the ancient Venetian fortress built in 1423. Built in the marvelous Venetian architecture, it is one of the remaining structures of the Venetian rule of the island from the 14th to the 17th century.
There are also the old churches of Agios Ioannis and Agios Nikolaos from which the islet takes its name. The frescoes here are interesting. The islet offers a much delightful view of the harbour of Gaios and the horizon to the other side with the crystal blue waters of the Ionian Sea, while its isolated beach is great for relaxing. For the best view walk up to the old windmill on the islet which itself makes a mark.
