The Municipality of Lefkada and all the surrounding islets, to which also Meganisi island belongs to, have retained the traditional elements in the form and the structure of the buildings.
The houses are constructed with plain materials and they are in perfect harmony with the natural environment.
The simplicity and the frugality of these settlements express the respect that the Lefkadians always had towards nature.

At the same time they constitute the “living” pictures of a really traditional way of life.
Once in Meganisi, attention is immediately caught by the harmonious architecture that encloses elegance within simplicity.
The colorful shutters, the wooden balconies, the large french windows and the red-tiled roofs create a picture that expires the tranquility of the past, strongly reminding of Greece during ‘60s. |

The villages of Meganisi - Vathi, Katomeri and Spartochori - with the narrow picturesque streets consist of small stone-built rustic houses and they are full of wells, from where the inhabitants used to draft the water.
Today the operating wells are very few. However, most of them, built of stone, impress visitors by the art of their structure, forming a low circular stone bench in the lower part.
