As Mathraki is a small and isolate island, most of its inhabitants deal with farming and fishing. You will certainly find the most fresh fish in the few taverns of Mathraki because people fish it themselves every morning.
Apart from fresh fish, the second most popular product of Mathraki is the olive oil. You will see vast areas of olive trees in Mathraki
thta extend all over the island till the beach side. These olive trees are still gathered in the traditional manual way every autumn and then the fruit is processed to get the high-quality oil.
People in Mathraki cultivate biologically. Pressing is done usually in the olive presses in Corfu. The fruit is transfered there by boat. |
