Lefkada Town : Information about the town of Lefkada, Greece, Ionian

General:
At the end of the causeway you are at once in the towns centre. There is busy square here with a few bars that are quite noisy in the evening. Turning to your left you can walk along the waterfront admiring the boats in the huge marina. Right from the causeway takes you along the canal section where boats are also moored. Facing this are a number of nice bars and restaurants. Continuing along you reach the large town hall where the museum and cultural centre are housed.

The town’s main street, Ioannou Mela contains most you will need in terms of shops and eateries. It is also the perfect route to admire the corrugated fronts of the shops and houses. Just off the street, or in the case of Agious Spridon on it, are a number of churches most of which, unfortunately, are in a bad state of repair. The main square is also located on the street and is full of restaurants and people. Further out to the suburbs the houses are not quite as pretty and you will find many of the shops you would expect in a town of 20,000 people.

The public library in town is worth investigating. The building is in good condition with its peachy exterior and green shutters. It also hosts a nice garden. Inside notice how high the ceilings are, as are the doors. The basilica churches in town are plain and many have cracks down the side due to earthquakes. Of these Agios Spyridon is next to the main square and unfortunately positioned next to it are ugly kiosks selling drinks. Better to look at is Agios Nikolas with its strange metal bell tower and very pretty carved door frames. Other churches like Agios Georgious are a bit of a concrete mess from the exterior and are in the process of being repaired.
