Lefkada Karia: The mountainous village of Karia is located 14 kilometres southwest of Lefkada Town and, as one of the most important villages of the island, has about 1,000 inhabitants. The area where the village is located is full of trees and water sources.

Built according to the local architectural style, Karia is one of the few places of the island that still respects and keeps local traditions and customs.
 
This village is famous for its fine embroidery work reproducing the traditional motifs. Examples of this work are exhibited in the small Folklore Museum of the village. Every 11th of August a representation of a traditional wedding takes place in the village of Karia.

Our Impressions

The beautiful village of Karia sits high, high up in the hills. It is built very much on a slope and the houses here have the wooden shutters and balconies you find on most of the island. There are a few disused houses here that have been overgrown with plants but this only adds to the villages charm.

The village's main street contains quite a few bars a small square and also a very well kept church. Indeed the pale yellow walled church stands out and the bell tower is also worth scrutiny with its blue dome. Outside the bars elderly locals sit and chat and the pace of life seems slow here. The main square has some large trees provide you shade while you take a coffee break. Above the village there is a mass of Cypress trees and from some areas of the village you can also get a good view towards the north.

This is probably the nicest traditional village on the island and if you only visit one it should be here. A longish journey is rewarded with this lovely village and it could also be a good place to stop off for a meal.
