Lefkada Kalamitsi 02 The small village of Kalamitsi is located 23 kilometres south-east of the island’s capital on a green slope and enjoys a magnificent panoramic view. Kalamitsi is one of the oldest villages of the island and has 13 windmills as well as many churches, scattered all around the area, among which the most famous is the chapel of Panagia stous Kipous (Virgin in the Gardens).

This village was built in altitude as a protection from the frequent pirate’s raids.

Our Impressions:
This is a small picturesque village upon which the impact of the island’s tourism is little. There is a restaurant here but that aside you can see people continuing their rural lives and women in black traditional dress. Things move slowly here and a man repairing a hole in the small road that snakes through the village attracts most of the inhabitants out to look. As this example may indicate there is not that much here to see apart from the traditional house design.

Impressions: A nice, small village which can be passed through if you are traveling from the main town to some of the west coast beaches. If so then it is well worth stopping off for a quick look.
