The first inhabitants of Athani were Italians and in the late 15th century, the village received some Spanish speaking Jews. In the 1950s and 1960s, many residents moved to foreign countries or big Greek cities, in search for work. Athani today has a few permanent residents in winter and in summer the village receives many tourists and the population gets bigger.
The village of Athani leads to many nice areas, such as the great beaches of Gialos and Porto Katsiki. The Promontory of Lefkada is also found a few km from the village, where according to Menander, an ancient poet, the poetess Sappho of Lesvos fell from the rocks into the sea because Phaedon didn’t love her. The Promontory gives great view to the Ionian Sea and a lovely sunset.
The ruins of the ancient temple of Apollo of Lefkada were found close to the Promontory. Athani village would be an interesting area to go for an excursion as it combines natural beauty and historical sites. It can be reached by bus from Lefkada town or by private car. |
