island is fertile and very green in the inland. The cultivated portion of the island consists of groves of olives and vineyards. This mix of natural vegetation and cultivated crops provides a lovely lush green cover to the island. The coastline is rugged, especially on the western side of the island, where cliffs plunge down to beautiful beaches. On the eastern part there are islets, which make fine harbors.
 Lefkas Town is the capital of the island and it is located near the place where the island joins mainland Greece through a floating bridge. The town offers traffic-free streets and small squares, where tourists can walk about and enjoy shopping. The laid-back atmosphere of the town is contradicted by trendy yachts that visit the new marina. At the entrance of Lefkada Town, there is the Castle of Saint Mavra, the potector of the island.
The villages of the island, like Agios Nikitas, Sivota, Vassiliki, Karya, Poros and Kalamitsi, have their own prominent features that charm tourists. In particular, Vassiliki is popular for windsurfing, the mountainous village of Karya offers stunning landscape, Kalamitsi is close to three amazing beaches, while Agios Nikitas, Sivota and Poros offer a charming atmosphere for holidays.
 Apart from the traditional villages and the lovely sceneries, Lefkada is mostly famous for its stunning beaches. Porto Katsiki, Egremni and Kathisma are only few of the impressive beaches in Lefkada. With crystal water, relaxing coastline and surrounded by rugged cliffs, these three beaches are considered among the finest beaches in the Mediterranean Sea.
Very popular is also Agios Ioannis, where the afternoon wind is perfect for windsurfing and kite surfing. While the western side of Lefkada is famous for the impressive beaches, the eastern side has beautiful villages. Nidri, for example, is a popular tourist resort and its small port serves ferries to other Ionian islands, like Meganisi, Ithaca or smaller islands, such as Kalamos and Kastos. |
