Kythira Greece

Kythira Greece is an island part of the Ionian Islands group. It is an isolated island situated at the foot of the Peloponnese, between the Ionian and the Aegean Seas.
Because tourism is still quite undeveloped, the greek island looks like a calm refuge, with astonishing deserted beaches and traditional life. Even if part of the Ionian group, the island’s architecture reminds more the ionian.
This section of Kythira Island, provides much information: pictures, map, villages, history, museums, architecture, excursions, weather and much more such as a large choice of hotels...

Some Kythira topics of interest

:: The village of Paleochora

The village of Paleochora is the island’s pure marvel. It is the ruins of the Medieval capital dating from the Byzantine times and was called Agios Dimitrios. The village is situated on the north-eastern side of the island, northwest of a deep cliff. The village is characterised by its beautiful architecture which reminds the beautiful Monemvasia and Mystra.

Paleochora is a fortified village situated in a lower level than the surrounding hills and can not be seen from the sea, in order to protect itself from the many pirates’ raids. Despite that protection, the famous pirate Barbarossa managed to find it and destroyed it in 1537, selling all the inhabitants as slaves. It was never rebuilt since then for the reason that it is considered as a place of bad fortune.
