More about: Kefalonia island

Yesterday the government called upon the army to help warm up the Ionian island of Kefalonia as most of the area is under darkness since the spell of bad weather on Tuesday. The weather conditions have been deteriorating, and have already brought down 80 electricity poles.

With the aid of a C-130 military airplane and a navy vessel, 26 electricity heaters were delivered by the army and navy yesterday. The total number of generators delivered will touch 130, claim government officials. Only 40 percent of Kefalonia has electricity, in spite of continued efforts over the last few days aimed at restoring its power grid. A team of 37 technicians joined the, already 110 strong team of their colleagues on the island.  “Eighty wooden poles belonging to the island’s domestic power network have been destroyed,” said Evangelos Antonaros, government spokesman.
