More about: Kefalonia island

From Sunday's 5.9 magnitude quake, a series of aftershocks hit the Ionian island of Kefalonia yesterday. Sunday's earthquake caused widespread damage to roads and buildings including the archaeological museum on the island. The neighboring island of Ithaca also reported some damage.

There were no injuries in the tremors. Yesterday, government engineers were sent to Kefalonia to inspect the damage to schools, homes and roads. Several exhibits at the archaeological museum were toppled over due to the quake.

Measuring up to 5.1 on the Richter scale the strong tremors alarmed the residents of Kefalonia and Ithaca yesterday. Experts strongly expressed that the tremors were no cause of concern and are expected in the area as it is prone to earthquakes.
