Kefalonia Villages: Lixouri village in Kefalonia
Kefalonia Lixouri 01 Lixouri Kefalonia: Lixouri is the second largest village of the island of Kefalonia with a population of 3000 inhabitants. It is standing on the southern huge bay of Argostoli, facing the capital and separated from it by 33 kilometres; it is linked to Argostoli with the help of regular ferries.

The little town of Lixouri was built on the site where the ancient city of Pali used to stand, which was one of the four principal cities of Kefalonia during Antiquity.

Unfortunately, most of the beautiful Venetian buildings of the town have been destroyed by the disastrous earthquake of 1953, along with almost all the towns and villages of the island and of the other Ionian Islands; only a couple of mansions have been saved and can still be admired today.

Lixouri is obviously smaller than Argostoli but the pair both have waterfronts that mix the picturesque and the ugly and each has its own central square which the centre of attention. The main square of the village is Plateia Petritsi and is surrounded by many cafes and bars that are full of animation. Some nice festivals are also hosted on this lively square. The inhabitants of Lixouri are famous for their musical capacities and the village has one of the oldest and most important orchestras of Greece.
The waterfront has a number of restaurants that vary in quality and appearance with the port at its centre. Here you will find one of the nicest buildings in the village with its pinky cream exterior.

In the area of Lixouri one can find some of the most beautiful beaches of the island such as Lepeda, Xi and Mega Lakos, as well as some interesting and lovely churches.

Our Impressions:
Lixouri is by far the largest village on the south west peninsular. The area is pretty wind swept and the weather here temperamental. In the vicinity you will find some nice beaches and also at the bottom left corner Kounopetra which is an isolated point offering some good views. On the west coast along a long coastal journey taking you through roads filled with goats and sheep you find the Monastery of Kipoureon. It is in an excellent position for isolation and a stunning view is offered of the sea here.

This is another village whose architecture has suffered from the earthquake. There is not a lot of interest in the village but it is quite large and useful for amenities. It is also a clear arrival point for the south west peninsular unless you take the long drive around the coast from Argostoli.
