I discovered the island of Kefalonia while surfing on the internet. We went there on holidays for two weeks in September. It was just like expected; mountainous and not heavily developed as a tourist centre; Although there was limited access to beaches, they were good for swimming and snorkeling; The food was good and the people hospitable; Warm weather (not too hot in September). We hired a car and made the tour of Kefalonia and only used ferries from Sami to Ithaca and from Lixouri to Argostoli; we loved the village of Agia Efimia and you shouldn’t miss visiting the beach of Myrtos. An unfortunate incidence took place on the ferry service to Ithaca; Staff rude and at times offensive, inconsistent in their parking instructions and unpleasant to deal with resulting in a complaint to the ships captain. This was the only unpleasantness we experienced in 2 weeks and despite apologies from the ships captain I have no confidence that this will not be repeated for other visitors. Ship of questionable seaworthiness with rust holes and cracks in decks. Would have refused to travel on it off sheltered waters! Another negative point was that the signposting to archaeological and other sites of interest was arbitrary and led us to give up looking on occasions. Apart from that, we had a very pleasant and relaxing holiday. The sea was wonderfully clear and there were many fish within a short distance of the beach so snorkeling was very rewarding. Feeding the fish bread attracted the fish to within inches. Enjoyed Argostoli particularly in the evening in the main square and also the fruit market. The hotel we stayed at was good, at very reasonable prices, and the owner very helpful and friendly. As for nightlife, this was not a major concern and the bars and restaurants met our needs. I’d rate the overall quality of services on Kefalonia with an 8/10. I’d like to come back someday and I will recommend it to others as well.
