Location: Argostoli

The lighthouse of Saint Theodoroi in Kefalonia lies on an artificial peninsula close to Argostoli, the island's capital. It is a white, circular structure made up of 20 columns, and its tower is 8 meters tall. The building has a rather simple architectural design reminiscent of the Doric style, and it shines white light that reaches five miles. It showcases a unique layout, as it comprises an older windmill enclosed by pillars without featuring a room for a lighthouse keeper. It got its name from the chapel of Saint Theodoroi, which lies nearby.

It was originally built in 1828 by the British administrator Charles Napier, who ruled the island during that time. Although the British military rule was quite severe, they enhanced the local infrastructure, which contributed to the prosperity of Kefalonia. In 1863, after the integration of the island into the Greek State, it was incorporated into the lighthouse network of Greece. In 1995, the Ministry of Culture declared it a preserved monument of modern Greek history.

The earthquake of 1953, which was devastating for Kefalonia and the other Ionian islands, also destroyed the lighthouse, along with countless other buildings. It was rebuilt in 1964 by the local architect Takis Pavlatos according to its original architectural plan. The lighthouse of Saint Theodoroi remains functional, while the spot it is located on offers incredible sea views, especially during sunset.
