In brief, it is possible to reach Kefalonia by taking the ferry. None of the three ports of Athens (Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrion) serves routes to Kefalonia; all ferries depart from regions of western mainland Greece.

Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands and lies between Zakynthos and Lefkada. It has two main ports and two smaller ones.
The first main port is that of Poros, which receives passenger ferries that depart from Kilini (Peloponnese). It is located on the southeastern side of the island, 40 km away from Argostoli, the capital of the island.
The second main port is in Sami. It is situated north of Poros, 26 km away from Argostoli. Ferries from/to Patra (Peloponnese) and Astakos (Aetolia-Acarnania) arrive at/depart from Sami. Moreover, the seasonal ferries from Italy (Bari) also approach the port of Sami.
Pessada is a small port in the southern part of Kefalonia. Ferries to the neighboring Zakynthos depart from there. Fiscardo also hosts a small port, used mainly by yachts and other smaller vessels.

Kefalonia is connected by ferry with three regions of Western Greece as well as other Ionian islands. You can reach the island by ferry from the mainland - namely Kilini, Patra and Astakos - and the island of Ithaca. During summer, local ferry boats may reach Lefkada and Zakynthos, too. Last but not least, some seasonal routes from/to Bari, Italy may be available during the high season.

From Kilini

Many travelers who start their trip to Kefalonia from mainland Greece, select Kilini as their port of departure.

Bad weather conditions (strong winds or storms) and waves usually don't affect conventional ferries. • • Zakynthos: Zakynthos, the home of the bewitching Navagio (Shipwreck), lies below Kefalonia. • Where is the ferry port in Kefalonia?
Kefalonia has two main ferry ports - one in Poros and one in Sami. Poros is located in the southeastern part of the island, a 50-minute drive away from Argostoli, the island's capital. It serves ferries coming from/heading to Kilini. On the other hand, Sami is located in the eastern part of Kefalonia, a 35-minute driving distance from Argostoli. Sami's port serves ferries that come from/head to Astakos and Patra. Both areas boast a picturesque setting and beautiful beaches nearby.

• How do I get from the port to the beaches?
The village of Poros has its own beach, only 2.5 km away from the port. Apart from the village's beach, the charming unorganized beaches of Limenia and Kato Lagadi are located in the wider area, 3 km and 4.4 km from the port respectively.
The closest beach to Sami (4.5 km away) is the famous Antisamos, one of the top beaches on the island. Antisamos is organized, offers the possibility of water sports and is one of the most beautiful beaches in the region. The scenery is breathtaking and it is also famous for the beach parties that are held there. At about the same distance but from the other side of the settlement is Agia Paraskevi Beach. It has vegetation, clear waters, and is partly organized.
As for the distance from Myrtos, the unreal beach that ranks among the best in the Mediterranean, Poros is 43 km away; Sami is 18 km away.

• How do I get from the airport to the port?
The airport of Kefalonia is located just outside the center of Argostoli. In order to go to either of the two ports by public transport, you will first have to board a public (KTEL) bus from the airport to Argostoli. After arriving at the bus station in Argostoli, you will take another bus to either Poros or Sami. The frequency of the routes changes depending on the season so it is recommended that you visit the official website of KTEL Kefalonia or call the central office before arriving on the island.
Both ports are quite far from the airport, so it is impractical to take a taxi to the ports.
In order to be comfortable and not think about the weight of your luggage or missing the bus service, consider renting a car! They can deliver it to you at the airport and you can start your excursions directly to the different parts of the island!
