Villages: Paleohora village in Ithaca |
Paleachora village Ithaca: Paleochora, literally meaning Old Village, used to be the capital of the island during the middle Ages and the beginning of the Venetian period.
Today, only ruins remain of this village that was abandoned by its inhabitants in the middle of the 16th century, who moved to the coast when the pirate raids became less frequent. The houses in Paleochora were built of wood and stones with narrow windows, like little forts, as a defense against the pirates.
The houses were not standing one close to another as were most of the fortified villages’ houses because the inhabitants were coming from different places and they didn’t trust one another very much. The ruins of those houses and of old churches with fine Byzantine frescoes are the only thing left of the village and very interesting to visit.
