More about: Corfu island

For centuries, the island of Corfu hosts the most famous and glorious Easter celebration in Greece. Like every year, this Easter, too, which takes place this weekend, Corfu is getting ready to host different and interesting celebrations. As Easter traditionally means the opening of the tourism season, hotels on the island have opened to accommodate visitors.

Celebrations climax on Good Friday morning, when the Epitaphs from all churches concentrate in Spianada square and bells ring signing the moor of the Christians for the death of Jesus Christ. On Good Friday evening, the Epitaphs make the tour of the town accompanied by pilgrims holding candles.

On Good Saturday, after the morning Mass, people concentrate in Spianada square, where the locals throw jugs filled with water from their windows. The noise that the jug makes when it breaks symbolizes the joyful message that Jesus Christ has arisen from Death to save people from their sins.

On Good Saturday midnight, pilgrims concentrate in Spianada square again to attend the Holy Mass and right at midnight the holy light, brough in Greece by the Tomb of Jesus Christ in the Holy Lands, is distributed to people, celebrating the Ressurection of Christ.
