All websites about Corfu are specifically dealing with the Agios Gordis area. The information supplied upon request from the Greek Tourist Office in London, was sparse at best and failed to include much that we were informed would be supplied. Indeed, most of it appeared to be handbooks specifically dealing with events surrounding the Olympic Games in 2004. WHAT USE would that now be to anyone? Get your act together, Greek Tourist Office!!
Furthermore, the ONLY decently accurate road map that we were able to find was one that had been hand-drawn by someone living in Nottingham UK and who had published this merely in frustration at the hopeless more officially-produced efforts!
The beaches on the central WEST coast of Corfu are absolutely superb, especially for families. The East coast features mainly shingle beaches, which are far less attractive.
There are pitifully few historical monuments to visit on the island and those that do exist are not adequately signposted, nor do they feature in the majority of the guidebooks or free literature available locally. This is far from the case on other Greek islands that we have visited.
The standard of cuisine in Corfu we found to be consistently of a very high standard, even at small taverns off the beaten track. We are forced to observe, however, that we found prices everywhere to be far higher than those we experienced during our visit to Turkey in 2006.
Demolish Kerkyra Airport completely and build something far more in keeping with its status as an "international" airport. Treat foreign visitors arriving at/departing from the Airport as distinguished guests, NOT as cattle. Improve road signs throughout the island. Generally, we found these to be poor, inadequate and often badly positioned.
