More about: Corfu island
Corfu town is the first place that you'll probably see in
Corfu. It has a strong Venetian influence. The whole island is full of palaces, strongholds, museums, archaeological places, libraries and churches, most of them in the town. The central square, along with Kanoni, are the top places of the town. At Kanoni, there are many luxury hotels and a great view over the sea and Pontikonisi. Ponitkonisi is a small island, reachable with small boats in one minute. On that isle, there is a church called the church of Pantokrator, which is a very popular sight.
Another great place to visit is the isle of Vidos, right opposite the town. Vidos has nice places to swim, usually not crowded and one restaurant. Outside the city, Corfu is generally covered by green olive tree valleys or pine tree forests. Corfu has some nice beaches and a water fun park, but the best beaches in the area, or... let me say in Greece, are on the small islands next to Corfu, Paxi. I've traveled to many places in Greece, especially islands, but still Paxi remain my favorite!
While in Corfu, try Mantoles, a traditional Corfu sweet with browned almonds in caramel. Delicious! Another special made in Corfu product is ginger beer. This is a refreshing drink with lemon juice, ginger and sugar mostly. It has to be served fresh and cold, and you cannot find it outside Corfu. Still, most famous things to drink and eat on Corfu is koum kouat. That's a kind of tangerine juice, maybe Chinese, that is very common there. You can find alcohol drinks, liqueurs, jams and traditional sweets with koum kouat.
