Corfu Temple of Artemis

The magnificent temple of Artemis Gorgo in Corfu was a typical Doric temple. Dedicated to the Greek goddess Artemis, the temple was located at the place where the airport of Corfu is today, in the northern part of the city. The temple was massive in size with as many as seventeen gigantic columns and it was probably built from 590 to 580 B.C. by highly skilled craftsmen.

The largest part of the temple is ruined and many parts have been moved to the Archaeological Museum of Corfu. The museum showcases the pediment of the Artemis temple which is impeccably preserved. A characteristic feature of the temple pediment is the Medusa and many scholars regard this as the finest specimen of prehistoric sculpture.

The Temple of Artemis is located in Corfu Town just a 23-minute walk away from the central bus station and a 25-minute walk away from a parking lot.
