Geography: Greece
is situated in southern Europe, bordering the Aegean
Sea, the Ionian Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. The country
has borders with Albania, Turkey, Bulgaria and the Former
Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and it is the only country
of the EU without sharing a border with another member.
Greece is a peninsular and mountainous country with a
total area of 130.800 km2.
Islands: The
country is characterized by a large number of islands.
There are more than 1400 islands that represent one
fifth of the country's area but there are only 169 that
are inhabited.
The majority of the islands are scattered in the Aegean
Sea between the Greek and Turkish coasts. The mainland
consists of 7 major regions: Central Greece, Peloponnesus,
Thessaly, Epirus, Macedonia, Thrace and the island of
Euboea.
Popluation: Greece
has a population of 10,610,000 (2000) of which 3.7 million
are located in Athens, the country's capital.
Politics: Greece
is a parliamentary republic with a president at the head
of the state. The actual head of government is the Prime
Minister Konstandinos Simitis and the chief of state
is the President Konstandinos Stephanopoulos.
Economy: Greece,
along with Portugal, is one of the poorest counties in
the European Union. It is an agricultural country. 22%
of the workforce is employed for agriculture, 27% in
the industry sector and 50 % in the services.
The sector of tourism and shipping contribute the most
to economy.
Religion: The
population of Greece belongs to the Orthodox Church with
a majority of 98%. |
