Description of Santorini
Famous for its caldera, the wild landscape and the amazing sunset, Santorini is the top destination in Greece and among the most romantic places in the world!
Located in the southern Aegean Sea, Santorini has gradually developed its tourism facilities yet keeping intact the traditional character. Santorini is an archipelago of small volcanic islands formed by a severe volcanic eruption in the 15th century BC. In fact, this eruption was so strong that its lava covered the Minoan town of Akrotiri on Santorini and that tsunami waves reached the northern coasts of Crete and destroyed the Minoan town of Knossos there.
Perched high on the edge of steep cliffs, the villages of Santorini give the most amazing view to the sea and the caldera. Fira, the capital, is the busiest village on the island because most activities concentrate there and it also serves as a transportation hub. Oia, on the northern side, is however the most picturesque village as this is where visitors can admire the best sunset in the world! Although most villages on Santorini have developed in tourism, they have still managed to keep intact their authenticity and the traditional architecture, with the quaint houses, the small chapels, the narrow alleys and the charming windmills.
The beach scene of Santorini is also quite fascinating. Long stretches of black sand and pebbles formed by the lava have turned into hot spots for tourists. The most famous beach is certainly the Red beach, close to Akrotiri, which offers hot water and wild landscape to relax. Other beaches include Perissa, Kamari and Perivolos, organized with beach bars and water sports centers and surrounded by many hotels. A sight not to miss in Santorini is certainly the volcano, which is submerged at most of its part and only the top can be seen as it rises from the sea. Frequent tour boats connect Fira to the volcano and may include other places in their schedule, too, such as the Hot Springs and the remote island of Thirassia.
