Every island is different and has its own charm. The secret of Greece is its people - they are welcoming and warm and friendly and if you attempt to speak the language you can have a wonderful time making them laugh with the mistakes you make, sometimes adding an incorrect word on purpose just to achieve this result.
There are beautiful islands such as northern Kefalonia, Skopelos, Allonysos, Symi and the villages on Pelion which have their own amazing scenery and rugged charm, especially if you go off the beaten track and explore the countryside. Pelion is my wife's favorite place. Santorini is also included here but my wife does not like it as she thinks it is too commercialised although I love its beauty.
Some of the places with character are Folegandros, Naxos, Paros and Parga and then there is Greek Greece like Anafi, Alonyssos and Ithaka. And what about stunningly amazing Meteora ( takes your breath away) and the stalagmites and stalactites in the caves at Alistrati in Macedonia.
One of our most pleasurable moments was when we came across a seal swimming in the tiny bay at Damouhari on Pelion (where part of the movie, Mamma Mia, was filmed). I was busily filming this when my wife pointed out that it was a man in a wetsuit snorkelling! Also, a man filleting a large fish on the dock on Kastellorizo and throwing the bits to a large turtle that came every day for it's breakfast - magic!
Another time in Makrynitsa market, I met a lady selling herbs and asked her (in Greek) what herb was good for a man to take. With gestures and language she pointed to one and said it made a man strong in bed. I asked if her husband took it. She said yes and added a caution not use too much - it was this that killed him! So, at 73 years old, I only take one spoonful a week now.
In short, Greece is an amazing country with something for everyone. We just LOVE it and the people. Can't wait for 12th May to return to Samos and visit the little nearby islands we did not have time for last September. You will have noticed that we haven't said much about Samos here - we want to keep it secret for now!
