ISO, which stands for International Organization for Standardization, is a non-governmental organization. It consists of national standards institutes of 157 countries and its Central Secretariat is in Geneva, Switzerland. It is neither a private nor a public sector, but something in between; actually, some of its institutes are controlled by the government of each country while other institutes are private, mainly created by industry associations.
ISO examines businesses, projects, natural areas, literature works and many other topics and, according to some procedures and rules it has set, the Organization certifies that the services provided or the products produced are of high quality. ISO is active in any field you can imagine, from information technology and electronic tools to restaurants and photography. It has developed more than 16,500 International Standards for various topics and publishes 1,250 new standards every year. It functions since 1947 and has become the world’s largest standards developing organization.
