Heraklion (Greece)
Heraklion, the capital and main commercial port of Crete, is located 5 km away from the ruins of the Palace of Knossos, vestiges of the ancient Minoan civilization. The archaeologists thought that this palace, discovered in 1899 by Sir Arthur Evans and partially reconstructed, represents the mythical Labyrinth of King Minos. The Archaeological Museum in Heraklion displays many of the treasures discovered during the excavations.
