Visiting Santorini in winter season (from November to March in Greece) may sound strange for some visitors, however it is gradually becoming a reality. Over the last years, more and more off season tourists in Greece choose to visit Santorini in winter, either because this is the only period when they can have a holiday break from their lives, or because they want to experience the island away from tourist crowds and mass tourism.
Santorini is the most tourist destination in Greece. High season in Santorini is from early July to late August, while the first tourists come from March and the last usually depart in early November. This is when winter season starts in Santorini and the island is left to the locals. The majority of hotels and restaurants close, beach bars are certainly closed since early October and the boat trip to the volcano is unfortunately not working from November to March.
But if you enjoy famous destinations during off season, then this is the time to visit Santorini. The weather is usually good and sunny even in winter (about 8-15oC in the day and 5oC in the evening), with few cloudy or windy days. It very rarely snows in Santorini and if this happens it must be around February (but still this is a very rare case).
What to do in Santorini in winter
Walking and sightseeing are nice activities to do in Santorini in winter time. You will certainly not be able to swim in the beaches because the water will be cold, but you can rent a car for a day and drive around to see the island. The natural beauty of Santorini is amazing, even in off season. You will see miracles of geology and you will experience a bloomed nature that you can't see in summer.
Most people in Santorini off season will be locals, so you will see them doing the normal works: constructing, wine making, gathering herbs and fruits, and other winter jobs. The majority of restaurants and cafeterias will be closed, bus transportation will not be very frequent and the boat trip to the volcano or other tours will not be operating any more, but still you will see an empty island with special character and authentic mood.
For sightseeing, you can visit the museums, such as the interesting Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira, and of course do not miss the Minoan Town of Akrotiri. In winter, museums and archaeological sites are usually open until 15h00 (closed on Mondays). As you must surely not miss the sunset during your visit in Santorini, have in mind that the sunset time in winter is at about 17h30, around three hours earlier than in summer time.
What to bring with you
Bring winter clothes with you and coats. Not too heavy but not too light, either. Do not certainly bring your swimsuit or beach clothes because you will not need them. You can not swim in the sea of Santorini in winter because the water is very cold and also it can be windy.
