It is a medieval Monastery of St. John located in the Dodecanese, on the island of Patmos. The Monastery looks more like a fortress. It was built this way to withstand pirates. There are many important churches in Greece. Some of the most famous churches are:


It is located in Paros and it is considered as the most important Byzantine Monument of Greece. According to the myth, the church was built on the order of St. Helene, the mother of the first Christian Emperor Constantine the Great, during her travels to the Holy Land. Many consider the church as miraculous and thousands of pilgrims visit it every year on the 15th of August, the day of its celebration.


The region of Agios Oros (Mount Athos)

Agios Oros is the easternmost peninsula of Halkidiki. It is an autonomous state which is composed by 20 Orthodox monasteries and churches and has a population of 1400 Orthodox monks. The existence of the community is dated to 883 AD. Female visitors are not authorised on these lands. Even female animals are forbidden!

The church is located in the Cycladic island of Tinos and is considered a sacred Christian area of the same importance as Lourdes in France or Fatima in Portugal.


The church was built on top of a hill, on the site where the Icon of the Virgin Mary was found, after the vision seen by the nun Pelagia.
The church houses the miraculous icon and thousands of pilgrims arrive to Tinos every year to visit it especially on the 15 August, the day of its celebration, and on the 30 January, the anniversary of the discovery.
