Sithonia is the most beautiful peninsula of Halkidiki, as it contains the night life of Porto Carras casino and Marmaras on the west coast, as well as, the rural charm of the beaches on the eastern coast.
Unfortunately, this has been despoiled by the inability of the local government to collect the garbage that now decorates every highway & by-way. In previous years (I am a long time summer resident of Halkidiki), trash was collected 7 days a week. Now only 2 or 3 collections can be expected. The beauty of Greece is not the only thing affronted. Overfilled garbage bins are ravaged by dogs and the debris scattered over the highways & country side by the winds. Hardly a scene which tourists want to see. But summer visitors do not vote in Halkidiki elections, so elected politicians need not consider their concerns, I guess.
Is this an economic issue or just very poor management?
