|
|
Dear Friends,
I have just read and signed the online petition:
"Vote against the plans to convert the island of Crete into a polluted transit port"
hosted on the web by PetitionOnline.com, the free online petition
service, at:
http://www.PetitionOnline.com/forcrete/
I personally agree with what this petition says, and I think you might
agree, too. If you can spare a moment, please take a look, and consider
signing yourself.
Best wishes, _________________ Derek |

No comments... just read the petition text
There should create so many other petitions.
Here one for example.
- create a course in Greek schools in order to give to the children an ecological conscience and learn them to respect the land that hosted our ancestors, hosts us and will host our children
I just came from a we on an island and travelled by ferry. I was really badly surprised with the number of people throwing cigaretes, water botles and other things at sea. And what is funny is that all those people were... Greeks. Tourists seems to have more respect to our heritage that what we do...
A SHAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The stupid thing is that we only have that to sell: the beauty of the place. The economy is based on that. Smart... _________________ www.greeka.com

Yes, it's a real shame. I was talking with a friend today and we recalled swimming at a beach near Parga. We soon came out of the water when we realized that the beautiful ocean was full of plastic bags and garbage. The stuff apparently comes from the cruise ships and ferries; sometimes it gets washed out to sea and other times it comes towards the beach. You don't see it usually because it gets picked up on the beach, but in the water...yuchh!
I am also discouraged when I see garbage thrown over the cliffs on the mainland and in Crete.
I have a huge interest in traditional Greek (village) culture, and it's a real contrast when you listen to some of the old folksongs talk about the land, and people's relationship to it. Greeks are so proud of their culture and homeland, so it's really surprising that the country seems behind in some ways in terms of environmental and ecological conscience. The wordwide visibility of the Olympics in 2004 did something to raise awareness, but more is needed. Let's hope it comes soon. |

I completely agree!
Also something has to be done to preserve the turtles of Crete who have been hurt or killed by boat propellers, and unable to breed as deckchairs/sunbeds on the beaches are trapping turtles.
Even in the Carribean, all sunbeds have to be brought in each night to protect wildlife - this isnt done in Crete.
Its is shocking how the Crete government ignore the plight of the turtles! |
