| My wife and I have just returned from ten days on Kalymnos and enjoyed every moment. If I can help anyone with my little "bits" of advice, please let me know. We first went to the island 25 years ago. |

On our first date, for some strange reason I took Julia ( now my wife ) to a local Greek Restaurant in Chatham, Kent. He gave us first class treatment and at the end of the meal,he left a bottle of brandy on the table and a full selection of postcards of Kalymnos.
Two weeks later we agreed to go on holiday together ( much to everyones surprise ) and went to Kalymnos for two weeks with the restuarant owners family meeting us from the Athens ferry.
We had a great time, the food, the weather and most of all the special people of Kalymnos. After our holiday, we stayed together and a few months later married. That was 25 years ago! We went back another three times but last week for the first time is 23 years we returned again and had another wonderful ten days holiday. Our restuarant owner moved back to Pothia several years ago from Chatham, but we couldn't find him.
If can help anyone " going " to Kalymnos please let me know.

My husband's family are from Kalymnos and although initially I was a bit nonchalant about the fact that any time they had to spend on holiday was spent on Kalymnos when we finally went there after almost 12 years of marriage I can fully understand it.
We've just returned from spending almost 5 weeks there and are still missing it terribly. Although I've travelled a fair bit I can honestly say Kalymnos is without doubt the best place I've stayed out of Europe, Asia and Australia, and we look forward to visiting again (when time and finances permit of course!).
We stayed in Myrties at the Acroyali apartments and would definitely stay there again having seen a few other apartments on offer. There are cheaper apartments but the Acroyali suit a family of 5 both in facilities and proximity to transport and the beach.
Myrties and Massouri proved to be the most favourable areas to stay although anywhere on Kalymnos is just a short taxi ride to the main port anyway. One of the most appealing aspects of Myrties was the small port offering half hourly caiques to the island of Telendos where archaeological sites and good restaurants are in abundance. It was no trouble at all to simply board a caique to Telendos for lunch or dinner. |

Glad you had a good time on the island, it is a very special place. I tried to find a restaurant owner from Chatham, Kent who has now returned to Pothia, without success. Maybe this is reason to return soon.

| Thanks, funnily enough Kalymnian friends of mine have tried to return and start businesses there for the same reason i.e Kalymnos just has that magnetic effect! but have inevitabely returned to Australia as running a business if tough on Kalymnos as it is on many other islands. It undoubtedly is the place where the grass grows greener (lol - we didn't see much grass on Kalymnos but you know what I mean) but the very reason why many new ventures fail is its very appeal i.e it's an island that maintains it's traditional values. We'd move there permanently in a flash if there was anything we could offer the island but we painstakingly realise that Kalymnos is a gem in the rough that defies polishing else it would ruin what it already has. |

| I think my " restaurant friend" from Chatham always wanted to go back to the island. He was very successful in the Kent area for a number of years, but one of his sons wanted to play in the local bars/restaurants & even appeared on Athens Tv. So I think he was drawn back to Kalymnos. It's a shame I lost touch with him but I am sure he is on the island somewhere. |
