Weather - or to be more precise wind!

by JoJo » Sat Feb 16, 2008 5:40 pm

We are about to try & book this summers flights and wanted to glean opinion about when might be a good time to miss the wind!
The last 3 summers we went beginning Sept and end June. Each time we arrived to strong winds which persisted until the last day of our hols (10th Sept, 15th July & 9th Sept respectively!)
I know its a matter of luck, and differs year to year - official guides say the meltemi blows July-Aug. In the past I've been to Greece - admittedly Peleponnese (E & W coasts), Pilion (E coast) and Sporades end July- midAug and not had any winds!
Can't go too out of season (term starts mid-Sept) but it would be good to have some calm. Am getting temped to book August and put up with the crowds/heat.
Thinking of Milos-Syros or Skopelos btw.
Are the winds I spoke of increasing (?global warming), am I unlucky - or do they see me step off that plane!!
Any comments, experience welcome
Thanks

I remember 2 years ago in August I was in Rhodes. It was very windy over there. (Ixia Rhodes). Beach was empty and everybody stayed at the hotels swimming pool

On the other side of the island there was no wind at all and everybody at the beach:-) Guess you have to keep in mind to which side of the island you want to stay (out of the wind).

For sure Alexis can tell you which side is the best choice :D

To be honest, i think the wind can come at any time, especially after a really hot spell. Just luck, I guess.

:D I've got this great pic from Sept. 2001 on Amorgos where my hair was standing staight up because of the the whipping winds.

I've come to accept the winds as the price you pay for being in paradise in Sept.
No ones seems able to predict them but luckily they don't blow constantly.
