|
|
Hi to all. This is letter I just received and thought of sharing it with all:
| Quote: | Unfortunately we didn’t go to Koufonisia even though it was one of our preferences. The first problem is that transportation is BAD…
Rooms limited especially in the mid summer season because availability was after August 25th in most hotels etc…And besides all these negative points, their prices were too high. This is how Greek islands are spoiled by people who believe that they can make their whole yearly income within two months and take it all from the poor Athenians who come there to leave their money. Like the Greeks say “They have climbed their stick” just like a lot of other islands that are in style now. Their restaurants are also very expensive for their category, etc…. Personally I’m a Thinking Greek who has lived abroad most of my life so I can easily analyze and compare. When will these people become professionals and not just immitations. How many more years can they fool because soon they will simmer down to what they deserve. I’m not saying this goes for the particular island but it’s the same for quite a few others. Therefore, this year we went to a far off island called Nysiros, where prices were half in mid July and all their services good and respectable because they have already suffered a depression period from doing what these other little new islands are doing. The consequences are high and they are trying correct their damage by keeping prices very very low but are still suffering. For an example, this island of course is much bigger than Koufonisia and has some touristic importance….spa, live volcano, charming traditional villages etc… Koufonisia is just a rock a few kilometers big with only the sea which you can find anywhere, so advise them not to show off so much.
I’m sorry if I sound harsh but I’ve been around quite a bit in Greece and have visited many many islands and mainland of course…. so I am able to compare and give you my opinion, My friends, colleagues that have been around as well…. have the same opinions...
... They still have a lot to learn and it’s part your job as a specialist to teach them to see things from a broader view; that is if you people are as interested as you show…about Greek Island Tourism.
Best regards |

Ok I have read the letter and to tell you the truth, I don t believe the islands are too expensive.
It is just a matter of demand and availability. Till now I have always found a decent place to stay for reasonable money.
But I am not blind and spending where ever I want. I take care where I go, where I eat, go for a drink etc.
Only in some "trendy" places they dare to charge 5 or 6 Euro for a beer, 5 for a coffee, 10 Euro for a bacardi cola etc. Come on.. I refuse to pay such prices.
But in general the islands are not so bad with the prices. I think some places in the mainland are lots more expensive. |

I so agree with you Alexis
We have found that very much too and been to Greece lots of times.
PLeased you enjoyed Nysoris, we went for a day trip and it had got so much charm it was lovely.
We have been looking at places to stay next year in Greek islands as we usually go at least twice but finding more and more that people are putting their prices up so much one place was 20 euros a night more.
We went to Agistri this year and found some of the places to stay were double the prices of others. We were told it was a reasonable place to stay due to the Athenians coming over. We found the restaurants not so reasonable and also a couple we went in had no menu , when we asked at one was told it was only in Greek so we were stuck and the bill was not really cheap...
We also had 2 weeks in Lesbos later on this year and although it was the 3rd biggest island were somewhat suprised as to how unspolit it was and the prices for food were so good, and lovely restuarants too. |

I inform you that the letter was not mine. I received it in my office (greeka) and thought to share it.
Well, Greece has became a big touristy industry. And that is good for the reason that Greece makes a living mainly from tourism. But it is bad for quality tourism. When I say quality tourism I don't talk about luxury tourism!
There are thousands of new small hotels/restaurants every year. The problem is that there is no previous education on how to manage a touristy business and even less, a general thought that will keep Greece as a main touristy destination in the world. The problem is that every one works for itself and, as the season is really short, they make everything possible to earn as much as possible from it.
But not all are like that. There are many excelent places which take a special care of guests. And to my opinion, every area in Greece has a lot to offer in term of quality. I always found the perfect places in every destination of Greece I have visited (more than 70), even the most touristy of them. You just have to find them. Also there are many areas in Greece were tourism is not developped and there are real paradises. Of course, I won't talk about them _________________ www.greeka.com

| I agree! I travel to Greece every summer and have gone to many islands! The only island that I can say is all around expensive is Mykonos, and again it's MYKONOS - so of course the prices will be double/triple. However, even with islands like Mykonos where a lot of people travel to it, many people i know have found reasonable hotels, and rooms to stay at and have the most amazing time while budgeting their money. |
