Island Plumbing?

by john shacallis » Sun Aug 07, 2005 3:12 pm

We are visiting Santorini, Paros, Naxos and Mykonos in September and are curious as to the condition of the plumbing at these Islands. We have been told that at some Islands we can not flush paper and need to use bins. Also, can we drink the water there or only bottled water?

Hello John,

The islands in Greece do not have the plumbing system of the mainland cities. Flushing the paper is really forbiden by the hotels and other accommodations for the reason that it can destroy all the plumbing system. So you need to use the bins.

Concerning the water, it is usually advised to never drink the water and to use bottled ones. Some people can drink it but if you are used to the citie's water system it is preferable to avoid it. Drinking the local water in Paros, Santorini, Paros etc won't send you to the hospital but depending of the people, you can at worst spend a day in your room on the "king's chair" :?

You get used to the bins, it's not that bad, and in all accommodation they are emptied every day! I live in Greece and when I'm abroad, I always look for the bin  !

Generally you can drink tap water, however the Greeks are very fussy and will advise you not to. In some areas it tastes a bit funny. I wouldn't worry, though, it won't make you ill!

Greetings from Paros

I never understood why people flush toilet paper in the toilets when there are bins right next to it... lol

It is better to stick to bottled water and never drink water from faucets. You should keep that practice anywhere in the world. About flushing the tissue papers, don’t worry most comfort rooms have a note if you can flush it or not.
